The mission of Iowa Kidstrong’s See-Us Run Des Moines is to help teens who face adversity in their lives learn that they are capable, resourceful and resilient to respond to life challenges by providing them the opportunity to experience first-hand the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health through committing to, training for, and completing the Des Moines Marathon.
SEE-US RUN DES MOINES OBJECTIVES IN CARRYING OUT THIS MISSION ARE: 1.) To provide Adult Running Mentors and Running Support Volunteers who assist student training and reinforce the life lessons of responsibility, discipline, and goal-setting; 2.)To create an opportunity for students of any and all backgrounds to engage with one another and experience an important sense of belonging; 3.) To support students in tackling a supremely difficult goal which breaks down mental barriers and creates “can do” thinking; and 4.) To offer a program where all students are welcome, everyone has the same chance to complete the goal, and everyone wins.
We are training for success in life. We’ll be there with you every step of the way as you strive to reach your goals and we’ll see you at the finish line! See-Us Run Des Moines
Program Description See-Us Run Des Moines (SRDM) is an innovative intervention program that challenges teens to train for and complete a 26.2 mile marathon. It is based on a long-running and highly successful program that began in Los Angeles in 1989 and, through support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation which funded the creation of a replication toolkit to introduce it to other communities around the U.S., Iowa Kidstrong launching a pilot of the program at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines to prepare students for the October 17, 2010 IMT Des Moines Marathon. (Click here for student info.)
Similar to its parent program, SRDM will be a school-centered, non-competitive program lasting a minimum of 25 weeks. It will rely on a corps of caring and dedicated adult volunteers to run with the students after school and through the summer months, forming a unique bond that brings many rewards to both parties. It will feature a progressive training schedule taking participating students from mile zero all the way through completion of the Des Moines Marathon in October 2010. The training program is designed to do so in the least overwhelming way possible. During the training season, the students commit to train three times a week at their school or at designated locations in Des Moines, and on the weekend they come together along with the adult volunteers for a longer run in area neighborhoods and on local trails. Along the way, students will participate in races around the community of varying distances building toward the marathon, giving them experience with running events, keeping them engaged in the program, and giving them the opportunity to interact with others in a positive way.
As a part of the SRDM program, Iowa Kidstrong will offer educational workshops including injury prevention, nutrition, goal-setting, and others. These workshops will be provided by local experts in each relevant field. We will work with the school to monitor grades and attendance through a Roosevelt staff member identified as a Student Support Liaison. Students will also fulfill a community service and volunteering requirement during the program.
